We were two animals
A fox and a hound.
From foundlings to friends but too ready for battle
The air still smells bloody
Where we scuffled
Scratches and teeth marks left on the skin
A very sad song fills my heavy heart
I watched two death-head moths
Pass a hundred summers
Clicking and shrieking raids on beehives
Sucking golden honey dodging stingers
We try not to judge things we don’t understand
One fox and one hound
Roaming muddy forests
Loud brilliant and desperate
But den-less
Then a miracle sprang forth
A wolf cub was born
A wondrous fruit
From a strained companionship
A thousand goodbye songs
Eases the passage of time
Memories of a unlikely bond
Released with bit tufts of fur
I release you
Our feral past keeps haunting me
A child with wild eyes
I’m barely holding it together
A toohtsome truth
A resentful heart
But there is grace in this too
A thousand goodbye songs
Echo in the forest
And we go our separate ways
Licking wounds as we heal
But at least we heal
